At the time of our 20th anniversary in 2007, Malcolm Smith,
Clarrie Roberts, Leon van Rensburg and Roy Fiorentinos were members of
the Club. Malcolm Smith had resigned and since rejoined. The others
were members for the duration of the 20 years.
The first meeting venue was the Bonza Bay Hotel in
Beacon Bay which no longer exists.
Some recollections of the early years
One of the first projects was the Bonza Bay Beach
Bonanza which was done in conjunction with the Lions Club. It consisted
of:
-
Horse racing on the beach
-
A swimming race in the
river
-
A canoe race in the river
-
A slide across the river
-
Sand races down the dunes
-
Water slides for the
children
-
Suiker kaskenades, and many
more games
An interesting project which is still talked about is
“The Spirit of Rotary” Wagon which was built in 1988. The Club borrowed
horses from the Beacon Bay Municipality to pull the wagon every Saturday
to take local children for a ride.
Every Saturday Club members would meet at the
Municipality stables and make sure the horses are spanned in. The
drinking habits of the Municipal worker at the stables sometimes caused
problems. One day, he mixed up the reigns which caused the horses to go
left when you wanted them to go to the right. On another occasion the
horses just refused to move. Frank Burtwhistle got a bright idea, and
went off to the local store to buy apples, which he then dangled in
front of the horses in an effort to make them move.
